What to Wear for Your Family Session

Choosing outfits can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! The goal is simple: everyone should feel comfortable, confident, and like themselves. When that happens, the photos feel natural and timeless.

#1 - Start with Mom

I always suggest starting with Mom first. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it sets the tone for everyone else. Choose something that feels flattering, comfortable, and like “you”—whether that’s a flowy dress, a soft textured sweater, or a simple neutral outfit you love.

Once Mom’s outfit is chosen, build the rest of the family around her look.

#2 - Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same outfit. Instead, aim for coordination.

Think:

  • Complementary colors instead of identical ones
  • A shared color palette or tone
  • A mix of textures and subtle patterns

This creates depth and visual interest while still feeling cohesive.

#3 - Stick with Solids, Soft Patterns & Textures

Solid colors photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your family connection. Smaller, subtle patterns can work well too—think delicate florals, thin stripes, or soft plaids.

Textures like linen, knits, denim, and gauze add beautiful dimension without being distracting.

#4 - Keep It Simple

Avoid anything too bold or busy that might pull attention away from your faces and connection. Neons, large logos, and heavy graphics tend to distract in photos.

Instead, think:

  • Soft neutrals
  • Earthy tones
  • Muted, natural shades

These tones always photograph beautifully in natural light.

#5 - Consider the Setting & Season

Your location and time of year matter. Light, airy tones work beautifully for spring and summer sessions, while richer, layered tones feel perfect for fall and winter.

If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help you choose outfits that fit the location and vibe of your session.

#6 - Most Important: Be Comfortable

If you’re constantly adjusting your clothes, it will show in your photos. Wear something you can move in, play in, and snuggle your kids in.

The best photos come from real connection—not perfect outfits.
